One of the precursors to diabetes is having elevated blood insulin levels. Especially if you are overweight or if you are having trouble conceiving, you should have your blood insulin levels checked.
If they are too high, they can start you on medication to correct it.
Cutting out refined sugars and simple carbohydrates can also help.

I found that potatoes, pasta, and bread were the biggest culprits in raising my sugar levels.

Its not so much your sugar levels as your insulin levels. You can have normal sugar levels and still have high insulin levels which will negatively affect your metabolism.

That's really strange... you'd never expect starchy foods like pasta and such to raise sugar levels (though, if I remember correctly, they turn into sugars so maybe it's not so strange lol). I didn't realize that sugar levels could be normal and that just your insulin levels could be high.

Honestly, I didn't either until it happened to me and the physiology behind it was explained to me.
At that time, that was after 10 years of being an RN.

My doctor told me to watch all these and cut them out of my diet as much as possible. My father will not stop eating these things, he has a bad heart and some other medical issues on top of being a diabetic so he is refusing to cut everything out of his life.

Yes it is hard when you have to cut out this and that for one illness, and another this and that for a different one... etc... Then you should eat item A because it is good for this illness but you can't eat it bcause it is bad for that illness... It is a pain. I love pasta and I love potatoes... The bread I can do without...
My doctor has suggested a healthy food habit and exercise to keep my body fit to control hyperinsulinemia...hope it comes under control.
