Older adults who nap in the day or who have a short night's sleep may be at increased risk of diabetes, according to a study in the January issue of Diabetes Care.

Qun Xu, M.D., of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in Research Triangle Park, N.C., and colleagues conducted a study of 174,542 adults whose sleeping habits were assessed in 1996 to 1997, of whom 10,143 were diagnosed with diabetes between 2000 and 2006.

There was a higher risk of diabetes among participants who took longer naps in the daytime, the researchers found. Those who napped for less than an hour were more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes, compared to those who did not nap (odds ratio, 1.23); and, those who napped for an hour or more were at even greater risk (odds ratio, 1.55), the data revealed. Body mass index only slightly attenuated both associations.

"Among participants with no napping, only short night sleeping was associated with higher occurrence of diabetes," the authors write. "These results may in part be explained by obesity or weight gain, and we could not exclude the possibility that napping was a marker of other health conditions that increase the risk of diabetes."
