Another common problem in diabetics is heart disease. My doctor assures me I'll have a much greater chance of avoiding it if I keep my blood sugars under control. I worry every time I feel a twinge in my chest, but so far my heart seems to be holding up okay in spite of my high blood sugars. I guess I can't exepct that to keep happening indefinitely, though. Darnit, I hate it when I have to make lifestyle changes.

Actually, not just heart disease but vessel disease in general. When your sugars are elevated, the walls of the vessels become sticky and therefore cholesterol plaques are more likely to attach -- narrowing the flow of blood in the vessels.
Yes, I agree, lifestyle changes suck, but they are the best thing you can do to help yourself. (I need to do some too!)

I guess making lifestyle changes beats the alternative, but it's still a pain. I need to eat less sugar (chocolate is my addiction) and more fruits and vegetables. I also need to start exercising somehow.

Have you tried sugar-free chocolate (in small amounts). We have a local chocolate maker here (munsons chocolate -- they might have a website) and they make PHENOMENAL gourmet sugar free chocolate!
I buy it once or twice a year as a treat. Also, I send a box to diabetic family members for the holidays!
It tastes as good and has the same great texture as the real sugary kinds. ;)
