I know that, in the case of Type 2 Diabetes, obesity plays a large factor in things. Needless to say, watching the calories and exercising would be a definate plus... but are there any dietary needs that the Type 1 Diabetic should adhere to?

My doctor has told me to cut back on the carbs. It's also important not to eat too much sugar, although an occasional treat is okay.

The type 1 diabetic should watch the simple carboydrates, such as sugar, rice, potatoes. These foods cause the blood sugar to go up too high when they are consumed and then the pancreas has to work harder to create insulin. The reason they take insulin is that the pancreas can no longer manufacture insulin as needed.

There are 2 good articles dealing with natural alternatives here:
http://www.diabetessymptomsonline.com/herbs-diabetes.htm (http://www.diabetessymptomsonline.com/forums/../herbs-diabetes.htm)
http://www.diabetessymptomsonline.com/herbal-treatment-diabetes.htm (http://www.diabetessymptomsonline.com/forums/../herbal-treatment-diabetes.htm)
I hope this helps.

I'm interested in learning more about the natural products as well. I looked at the links above--there's a lot there. Do you of anyone who has used any of those herbs/supplements and if it has been beneficial?

Hi, I'm a diabetic and have been for 12 years. Basically, eat a non sugary cereal for breakfast, (300 calories) with semi skimmed milk, a piece of fruit for morning snack (100), a sandwich for lunch preferably on danish bread, (300) another piece of fruit for afternoon snack, or a cereal bar, raisins, or a pack of crisps (100), a balanced meal, for dinner, eg. jacket potato, chicken fillet and salad, or chilli con carne with salad, or a pasta dish, (approx 600), then a digestive biscuit, or more fruit, or a piece of toast for evening snack (100). There you go, 1500 calories, 3 healthy meals and 3 snacks! It's not hard if you just completely cut out sweets and chocolate! Good luck!
