Yahoo Health has a great diabetic food guide. It shows you how to rate you foods by points.

Thanks for the referral, sandmike123, I'll have to check that it. My doctor has been having some serious conversations with me recently about losing weight and following a more traditional diabetic diet (I guess fast food, chocolate, and Diet Coke don't count).

LOL.... I think the diet coke would be ok but I am pretty sure everything else is a no no.....:)

Yep, it's all a no-no. I always say I can tell by how much I like a food whether or not it's good for me. All the foods that I love are killers, and all the ones that I find disgusting are the ones that the doctors urge you to eat. So...I guess I have to decide whether I want a short life with the foods I love or a longer life with the foods I hate. It's actually a tough question when you put it that bluntly. :)

I think I would rather die happy then eating yuck just to live.

That's kind of how I feel about it, too, but then I tend to be a very "black and white" thinker. My doctor assures me there are compromises, diets where I get to eat some of the things I love in smaller portions, just not all bad food all the time. Still sounds like it sucks to me.

I am sort of an all or nothing person myself. But yes there are compromises. Pretty mcuh like any diet portion control and moderation are key. They say the hardest part is getting started. I guess by eliminated on bad thing at a time and starting on good thing at a time would be the right way to do it.

Unfortunately Calypso, choosing the wrong foods won't kill you quickly, they will just made you wish you were dead as your organs and such begin to shut down on you. Definitely something to consider.

Thats my dads motto lately!
We have been killing ourselves trying to make food in new and interesting ways. I have found the worse thing to make sugar free is meringue for on top of a lemon meringue pie which is his favorite. Poor man has eaten every single one of my experiments I will give him credit at least for that! I haven't killed him yet with the experiments either!! lol

My theory is no matter what you do and eat something is wrong with eat. The government and whom ever else finds something wrong with everything.

That's true sandmike. But, I've yet to hear anyone criticize fresh fruits and whole grains.

Eventually it may come to that, sad huh.. But as long as fruits and vegetables are organic they are 100% good.. are they not? lol

You would think but the organic guidelines are not as strict as would like us to believe.... Plus I am not sure about you but I can not afford to pay double the price for something that is supposedly organic.

I have a hard time eating right. I find it hard to resist chocolate and sweets. It seems the more I try to diet the more weight I gain.

Well, the "good news" is that in CT the regular fruits and vegetables are so expensive to start with that the organics only turn out to be a few cents more. Oddly enough, in some instances the organics are less expensive.

Yes, looking at the big scheme of things I suppose something can be found with just about everything. But, for a diabetic, there are those "no-brainers" like sugar and a high carb diet, that are KNOWN to cause severe damage. When talking about eating healthy, we're not necessarily talking about quantity of life so much as quality of life.

well thats good. Makes it an easy choice for you...:) The organic veggies and fruits here are hardly ever anywhere near the price of the non organic.

The diabetic should care what they eat and drink . If they do not follow the right way, it will be very difficult for them to keep diabetes under control.
