Diabetes is the #1 cause of kidney disease.

If you are diabetic, it is so important to go to the doctor and have your urine checked for protein at least once per year. If you doctor doesn't do it, ask him about it.

Dialysis is such a terrible thing for anyone to have to live through.

Keeping your sugars within normal limits and having your urine checked for protein regularly is doing your part to prevent it.

My dad was on Dialysis for 10 years. His kidney failure was not diabetes related. It was terrible though... 3 times a week being hooked up to a machine for 4 to 6 hours.... PLus the chemicals they use to clean the machines can build up in your system and cause other problems.

The way my doc explained it to me is like this. The kidney is like a filter. When you have too much protein in your urine it is because it is not filtering properly. We found a trace of protein in my urine and I was placed on blood pressure medicine to decrease the pressure on my kidneys.
