Scientists believe exercise can help improve insulin-making beta cells function in sedentary elderly at risk of developing diabetes.

University of Michigan researchers claim beta cell function declines with age causing impaired insulin secretion; they become less sensitive to insulin's sugar-regulating effects and therefore place the elderly at a higher risk of becoming diabetic.

According to the study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, short-term exercise affects beta cell function and boosts insulin sensitivity in these individuals.

Findings showed that exercise increased insulin sensitivity by 53 percent, while there was only a 28 percent improvement in beta cell function.

Researchers claim sedentary life has similar effects as smoking and junk food in increasing the risk of developing diabetes and heart disease.
