that it is possible to go from a type 1 diabetic to a type 2 just by watching diet and exercise. A woman I use to work with also had gastric bypass as an alternative because nothing else worked. She worked with a doctor for over a years before they would approve this.

I'm not sure about this. Type I diabetes is usually diagnosed in childhood and occurs when a person's body produces little or no insulin. Type II (often called adult onset) diabetes occurs when the body can't use the insulin it does produce.
However, it is possible for insulin-dependent people with Type II diabetes to stop needing insulin injections if they get their weight under control and establish a healthy program of diet and exercise. Could this be what you're thinking about?

You cannot go from Type I to Type 2 diabetes with diet and exercise.
The only cure for Type I diabetes is a pancreas transplant.
Type 2 diabetes can be cured by diet and exercise in some people.
Type I diabetes is when the pancreas completely stops making insulin. They have not yet found a way to get it to start making insulin again.

Thank you for the information. I myself don't have an issue but my grandma does so I am looking into things so I can be more prepared for her and things she may need.

You're very welcome. I have been an RN for 15+ years now. Diabetes is everywhere and it just becomes part of your life when you work with it every day. Also, diabetes runs rampant in my family -- mom is NIDDM, dad was IDDM, both grandmothers IDDM. I have pre-diabetes so I know I'm a ticking time bomb. I'm glad I'm able to help. :)

Yes. In some instances of diabetes weight is a factor. For some people who have type 1 diabletes, losing weight is all they need to do. After a certain amount of weight lost they can be taken off of insulin. Some can be taken off of oral medication as well if they lose enough weight.
