I was diagnosed with diabetes about two years ago, at the age of 37. Prior to that, I had been "pre-diabetic," but with a strong history of diabetes in my family and several risk factors (including obesity), I knew it was really just a matter of time before I would be diagnosed as "full blown."

I was diagnosed with Type II about a year and a half ago at the age of 43. I can't say that I didn't have any warning signs but I was working so many hours at a high stress job that I never even considered there might be a cause other than stress and burn-out. Come to find out, those are probably the very things that brought it on.

A lot of things played a factor in my diabetes, but I think my weight was probably the biggest part of it. I have bipolar disorder, and the medication I take for it causes obesity which causes diabetes. If I stop taking the bipolar meds, I know I'll lose weight, but I also know there's a good chance I'll have a severe manic or depressive episode, which wouldn't be good. What a nightmare!

I can see what a dilemna this is for you Calypso. Have you managed to lose some weight through diet and exercise while on the other medication? If not, how do you manage your diabetes?

I am not diagnosed, but my son was diagnosed shortly after his tenth birthday. I was certainly glad he was older, so he could understand the consequences of his actions. It allowed me a little more peace of mind.

Hi!! I'm new to this site so be kind till I get used to it.
I was diagnosed December 2006 at 48. I'd suspected it for a few years as doctor kept sending me for blood tests every 12 months to keep an eye on things. It was either diabetes, pre menopause or thyroid problems. Did I get the bad end of this deal?
