FreeStyle Glucose Meter

Reviw submitted by: Tim

Diabetes mellitus has been affecting millions of people around the world, and most of these people have to constantly check on the levels of their blood glucose, sometimes even as frequent as possible. It is quite tedious, not to mention painful and expensive to be able to monitor daily blood sugar levels. The usual way to test for blood sugar levels is first, one must get their blood extracted using a syringe or a lancet, then the blood sample collected and made to clot to be able to get the serum part. When the serum is already available, it has to be run through a machine and there it is tested and measured. This procedure is okay if you only need to get your blood glucose levels occasionally. But if you need to measure it daily, like in the case of diabetics, then it is not practical to do so anymore.

This is the reason why Abbott Laboratories has designed the Freestyle glucose meter. This handy apparatus measures the amount of blood glucose in the body using only a small amount of blood. It is a compact and easy way to measure your blood glucose levels. Within only a minute, you may be able to get your blood sugar levels accurately and without any pain or hassle of going to the laboratory and waiting for a couple of hours to get your results. Also, with the Freestyle glucose meter, you can use several alternative sites to get your blood sample since it would probably be traumatic for your skin and vein if it were always taken at the same area every time you need to measure your blood glucose sample.

Freestyle glucose meter boasts of its accuracy and precision since it is the only glucose meter that uses four technical elements that make sure that the results do not include any contaminants that will affect its measurement. It first uses coulometry, which is an advanced technique to measure the electrochemical properties of the glucose concentration found in the blood sample. Freestyle glucose meters are the only glucose meters that can measure glucose concentration using a very small amount of blood, even just 0.3 microliter.

Also, Freestyle glucose meters do not start testing unless the blood sample provided is adequate enough for accurate testing. They give you a 60 second time period from the time the initial sample was given to be able to add more blood to it and thus start testing. The blood glucose test strip utilizes capillary action to get the precise amount of blood needed for testing.

Freestyle glucose meters employ the use of the enzyme Glucose Dehydrogenase to measure the glucose in the blood sample, without having Oxygen as a contaminant, as opposed to the widely used Glucose Oxidase which needs Oxygen to react thus interfering with the measurement. Freestyle glucose meters also apply a low potential voltage to the blood sample to be able to rid it of interfering substances such as uric acid, aspirin and acetaminophen when they are present in the blood in high levels.

Freestyle glucose meters are the best choice if ever you need to measure your blood sugar levels constantly, it being fast, accurate, painless, and needs only a very small amount of blood to use.
